Hello IT Pro,
Welcome back to IT Pro Tuesday!
This week, we’re looking for your favorite tips to share with the community. Please let us know those that help you do things more easily so you get better at your job!
As always, we’re updating the full, searchable list on our website here. Enjoy.
But on with this week's tools...! Here are the most-interesting items that have come across our desks, laptops and phones this week. Hornetsecurity has no known affiliation with any of these unless we explicitly state otherwise.
A Free Tool
Clusto is a python-based server cluster management tool that helps track inventory, telling you where everything is and how it's connected. Information is provided via an abstracted interface that allows you to interact with elements of your infrastructure. Data can be stored in any database you can interact with via SQLAlchemy.
This creative hack from derpyRFC makes physically tracing cables easier: "This might sound bonkers, but I've used poultry leg bands. They fit great and click into place. They come in an assortment of crazy colors too. Neon pink, orange etc."
Consul Open Source allows you to discover services and securely manage connections between them across cloud, on-premise and hybrid environments. Discover, automate, secure and connect applications and networking configurations across distributed infrastructure and clouds. Open-source version provides core service discovery, service mesh and service configuration. Our appreciation goes to airtruk for this one.
The Missing Semester of Your CS Education is designed to teach something that is often skipped over in class: proficiency with tools. It focuses on mastering the command-line, a powerful text editor, some fancy features of version control systems and more. Thanks go to piperbool for the suggestion.
One More Free Tool
SmarTTY is a multi-tabbed SSH client to help manage and transfer files and folders between the local and remote machines. This Windows application supports copying files and directories with SCP on-the-fly and editing files in-place. New Smart Terminal provides auto-completion, file panel, package management GUI and more. Nicnivian tells us simply, "I really dig SmarTTY."
P.S. Bonus Free Tools
GAMADV-XTD3 is an open source command line tool for Google G Suite Administration. Manage domain and user settings quickly and easily for G Suite for Business, Education, Non Profit, Partner or Government Edition. Suggested by FireItUpMatt.
ToDoList is a free (for life) Windows desktop application for organizing your tasks. Includes a system for logging and reporting time spent on tasks that can be useful for client billing. Allows you to create hierarchies to break complex tasks down into subtasks—each with start/end date, priority and other attributes. As subtasks are completed, the parent tasks are updated. Tasklists can be printed or saved in other formats for display and reporting. Kindly recommended by Xartsadrak.
Have a fantastic week and as usual, let us know any comments.
