Hello IT Pro,
Welcome back to IT Pro Tuesday!
This week, we’re looking for your favorite tools to share with the community. Please let us know those that help you do things more easily so you get better at your job!
As always, we’re updating the full, searchable list on our website here. Enjoy.
But on with this week's tools...! Here are the most-interesting items that have come across our desks, laptops and phones this week. Hornetsecurity has no known affiliation with any of these unless we explicitly state otherwise.
A Free Tool
ZeroTier offers an easy-to-manage, widely supported network virtualization platform to connect all your devices, cloud VMs and apps. Includes advanced features like a network rules engine, and applies automatic end-to-end encryption. Free for up to 50 nodes. guestsalt describes it as a "Mesh VPN with good tunneling properties… Can also create gateways so you can reach other machines that are routable from the gateway machine without installing the client to all of them."
A Script
This user monitoring script from Cyberdrain was written to keep bad actors from silently accessing a network through created accounts. AdministrativeMSP explains, "[An employee we just fired] tried to install a remote access tool, [which] creates a unique user per machine. Immediately our 24/7 support got e-mails saying new accounts got created at all clients.… Without this script there is a chance he would have installed malware or we would not have seen he still had access."
Humor
Faildesk is a humorous blog dedicated to all the IT professionals who work tirelessly to make sure "the system stays up." Features jokes, gags and spoofs plus hundreds of posts with stories, pictures and video of real life situations that maybe only a sysadmin can appreciate.
A Tutorial
Bash Guide is a tutorial that aims to teach beginners good BASH practice techniques and how to write simple scripts. Thanks for this one go to whetu, who tells us it is "widely regarded as the best."
Another Free Tool
Brackets is a powerful, lightweight, open-source text editor that blends visual tools into the editor to offer help without getting in the way. coolsheep769 tells us it's "a pretty nifty HTML editor/IDE. I like the live testing tools"
P.S. Bonus Free Tools
Soapbox is a Chrome extension that makes it incredibly easy to record, edit and share videos. Record from your webcam, screen or a split-screen view and add presentation elements (like slides or other videos) as needed. mspnewb recommends it "to make quick training videos or send video messages to clients / prospects / staff. The engagement is awesome and the clients love it. There's a free tier to get started."
WiFiman allows you to analyze nearby Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth LE devices, as well as offering device discovery and network speed tests. Scans the whole network subnet to show all available devices with the applicable details, using Bonjour, SNMP, NetBIOS and UBNT discovery protocols; so you can locate a less-crowded channel for your Access Point. qupada42 finds it "a better Android WiFi scanner than WiFi Analyzer."
Have a fantastic week and as usual, let us know any comments.
