Hello IT Pro,
Welcome back to IT Pro Tuesday!
This week, we’re looking for your favorite tech cheatsheets to share with the community. Please let us know those that help you do things more easily so you get better at your job!
As always, we’re updating the full, searchable list on our website here. Enjoy.
But on with this week's tools...! Here are the most-interesting items that have come across our desks, laptops and phones this week. Hornetsecurity has no known affiliation with any of these unless we explicitly state otherwise.
Free Tools
Eric Zimmerman's Tools provides several open-source digital forensics tools that can be used in a wide variety of investigations, including cross validation of tools, providing insight into technical details not exposed by other tools and more. Eric is a SANS Certified Instructor and Former FBI Agent who has written digital forensics tools that investigators use daily all over the world. Our thanks go out to PositiveStriking for directing us to this one.
A Cheatsheet
The Complete Office 365 and Microsoft 365 Licensing Comparison lays out the dizzying array of Microsoft products in a visual format. This guide is designed to help those who are confused as to exactly which of the overwhelming number of licensing options is the best fit for a particular situation. Our thanks go to digitaltransmutation for this one!
A Tutorial
iptables Ubuntu Firewall is David Egan's tutorial on how to configure iptables—a firewall program for controlling server traffic on a Linux system—which is set to allow all traffic by default. Our appreciation for the recommendation goes to CoronationStreetFan1.
A Website
The New Stack provides information on modern architectures, components of the software development lifecycle and operations tools and culture. Articles investigate new technologies and use cases with an eye toward both technical and business perspectives. Kindly suggested by d3ad_sub.
A Tip
A helpful hint to save you from confusing your environments, compliments of tcpWalker:
Set up your production environment to provide color-coded backgrounds, so you know at a glance what environment you are in—use purple because programs almost never use this color for output, so it doesn't mask it. This makes it much, much harder to mistake production for a test environment.
P.S. Bonus Free Tools
debunk2 is designed to unlock the Microsoft Outlook autocomplete email info, which is stored in an undocumented file format. It has proved valuable to JustAnotherITUser, who explains, "I've had to use this in the past to convert users from Outlook to Thunderbird. Yes, we're one of those."
OPNsense is a easy-to-build, user-friendly HardenedBSD-based firewall and routing platform. It includes most of the features you'll find in costly commercial firewalls, but with all the benefits of open source. uid_zero tells us, "I'm a bigger fan of https://opnsense.org/ than pfSense these days...I like the OPNsense interface better. They are functionally equivalent, for the most part."
Have a fantastic week and as usual, let us know any comments.
