Hello IT Pro,
It’s Tuesday again and time for the top tips we’ve discovered. You know the drill – unless we specifically say so, we’re not affiliated with any of the brands listed below.
LetsMonitor.org
LetsMonitor.org is a service that will let you know if there’s any misconfiguration of your site certificates or if they’re about to expire. The service is completely free to use, and you can set the alerts so they go through to multiple people if necessary.
Wahl Network
If you’re looking for a blog that was created for techies, Wahl Network is one you’ll want to check out. It was designed to help sysadmins overcome technical issues and to keep them up to date on new products and developments.
Switch Miner
Are you tired of physically checking every port to see where your device is plugged in? Switch Miner is a free tool that will give you a list of devices connected to a switch. It’s also able to scan adjacent switches using CDP.
Ghost in the Wires
This is our read of the week. Ghost in the Wires is based on real events. You’ll learn all about Kevin Mitnick – one of the top hackers in history. The book covers the biggest hacks he pulled off as he was being tracked by the FBI. It’s a fascinating read and gives you insight into a brilliant mind.
It’s also interesting to note that Mitnick’s antics resulted in companies coming up with new ways to protect against breaches.
A Server Room Tip
Unlabelled server-room cables are one of my pet peeves. Fortunately, there’s an easy fix. Just clip on a binder clip or Velcro strip and slide it down the length of the cable to see where it ends up. And, while you’re at it, label the cable, please.
That’s about all for now. See you next Tuesday, and don’t forget to let us know what helpful tips you learned this week.
Have a fantastic week and as usual let me know any comments.
