Welcome back to IT Pro Tuesday!
We're looking for cool tips and tools we can share with the community... those that help you do your job better and more easily. Please reply with your latest finds, so we can help others benefit from your experience.
As always, we’re updating the full list on our website here. Enjoy.
But on with this week's tools...! Here are the most-interesting items that have come across our desks, laptops and phones this week. Hornetsecurity has no known affiliation with any of these unless we explicitly state otherwise.
A Free Tool
Tabby is a highly customizable, cross-platform Terminal app for local shells, serial, SSH and Telnet connections. Features integrated serial terminal and SSH client with connection manager; support for PowerShell, PS Core, WSL, Git-Bash, Cygwin, Cmder and CMD; full Unicode support including double-width characters; file transfer from/to SSH sessions via SFTP and Zmodem; and much more. Interesting-Wolf-533 explains, "I like that I can save and easily insert code snippets I use all the time. That and it's really customizable looks-wise."
A Tutorial
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) vs. Static Routing is a great way to get clear on the precise differences between setting up a network using dynamic vs. static routing. Includes lots of great visuals that help explain the core concepts in the context of a private network with a private ASN. Appreciation for sharing news of this helpful resource goes to lightyearai.
Another Free Tool
The F*ck is a brilliant solution for those occasions when you are working in the console and your fingers decide to type something different than your brain intends. The app essentially cleans up your command-line errors for you upon request. Compares your typo-filled command against a long list of existing rules to find a match and then creates and executes a new command using the correct syntax. A shout out to omicronian_express for directing us to this one.
Yet Another Free Tool
FileLocator Lite is an exceptionally thorough search tool that can help you find what many others would miss. Allows you to combine search terms using familiar Boolean operators, with support for popular productivity suites and Perl-compatible regular expressions. Its highly efficient search algorithms provide quick results, with the found text strings highlighted so you don't have to open the file to see if it has what you're looking for. ipreferanothername adds, "the lite/free version is damn nifty so try it out."

Send Teams Notification when A User Logs in through RDP describes a handy method to facilitate auditing, monitoring, time-tracking and security with a Powershell script that notifies you whenever there is a remote login to a computer or server you need to track. The specific script provided will send a Microsoft Teams notification upon login, but it could easily be modified to use email, SMS or chat as needed. Thanks go to smarthomepursuits for the suggestion.
P.S. Bonus Free Tools
Octoprint is a handy, open-source web interface for 3D printing that allows you to control and monitor all aspects of the printer and its print jobs from a browser window. Kindly suggested by Shishire, who explains, "If you use and/or work with 3D printers, you need remote control of them, and Octoprint is one of the better 3D printer servers out there. With variants for all major OSes and Raspberry Pi images, it's pretty flexible."
Winaero Tweaker is a Windows system utility for adjusting hundreds of hidden settings that are not covered by the Microsoft-provided user interface—plus the ability to add some advanced context menus, options and handy commands to existing Windows apps and tools. Supports Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11. Our appreciation for this recommendation goes to mikeparkie.
Have a fantastic week and as usual, let us know any comments.
