Programming Syntax, SSL Scanning, Free Tools & More...

Get this in your inbox each week

Hello IT Pro,

It Tuesday, and that means it’s time for the most-helpful tips crossing our screens this week. As normal, we have no affiliation with any of the brands below unless we specifically state otherwise.

Windows Update MiniTool

This MiniTool is Windows Update Light. Unlike the standard Windows Update, this tool gives you a lot more control. You’re not going to be steamrolled into installing each update as they come along. Instead, the tool lets you search for the updates applicable to you, install them and block the main Windows Update tool.

Space Monger

If you’d like to see a graphical representation of your disk, Space Monger is a great place to start. Set it to scan, and it will identify every item stored on the drive. Why is the graphical representation such a big deal? You’ll be able to identify memory hogs quickly and simply. Better yet, you don’t even have to waste space on your drive installing it. Download the files to a USB drive and then plug and play. Thanks mikedopp for the excellent advice.

Learn X in Y Minutes

Learn X in Y minutes is a site driven by the community. You’ll find the quick syntax for a number of the top programming languages. ssebs was kind enough to provide the following links that take you directly to the page for the following common languages:

ImmuniWeb SSL Scan

By using ImmuniWeb® SSLScan you’re able to check any SSL/TSL security and implementation to ensure that it complies with the following guidelines:

  • PCI DSS
  • HIPAA
  • NIST

It will also check:

  • The expiration date of a subdomain’s SSL certificate
  • Insecure third-party content
  • Email servers’ SPF, DKIM, and DMARC implementation
  • Subdomains
  • Insecure third-party content
  • Emails

This powerful free tool was brought to our attention by pixl_graphix.

WintelGuy

WintelGuy is a site that LateralLimey suggested we check out, and it's proof of why it’s a good idea to ask your audience for tips. The site has a lot of useful resources, links, tools and calculators for sysadmins.  It’s one of the most useful sites we’ve seen in a long time.

That’s all for this week. Have a great week going forward, and don’t forget to let us know if you have any sites you think we should check out.
