Get this in your inbox each week

Hello IT Pro,

We're looking for great tips to share with the IT Pro Tuesday community. This could be command line, shortcuts, process, security, whatever—those little tricks you've discovered that made you think "where have you been all my life?" Please leave a comment with your favorite tip(s) and we'll be featuring them in the coming weeks.

And remember you can always find the full list on our website here. Enjoy.

But on with this week's tools...! Here are the most-interesting items that have come across our desks, laptops and phones this week. As always, EveryCloud has no known affiliation with any of these unless we explicitly state otherwise.

A Free Tool

lockoutstatus.exe, which is part of the Account Lockout Tools package, lets you quickly check user lockout information and unlock accounts. A favorite tool of nachomountain.

A Tip

Keyboard shortcuts for Windows, compliments of criostage:

  • Win + Up/Down Arrow—Snap current window to the top/bottom of the screen.
  • Win + Tab—Open a new Task View interface (it will stay open when you release the keys). Only windows from your current virtual desktop appear in the Task View list—use the virtual desktop switcher at the bottom of the screen to switch between virtual desktops.
  • Alt + Tab—Switch between open Windows. With Alt still pressed, tap Tab again to flip between windows, and then release Alt to select the current window. Alt + Tab now uses the new Task View-style larger thumbnails. Unlike Win + Tab, Alt + Tab lets you switch between open windows on all virtual desktops.

Another Free Tool

PingTools offers ping, traceroute, whois, network scanner, wi-fi scanner and more with a simple, intuitive interface. Recommended by IdesOfMarkReddit, who adds, "If you're on the move a lot, [it] has similar capabilities as NetworkManager but for Android."

Another Tip

"If you're trying to get a user to browse to a specific url, I suggest [having them use] F6 to get to the browser's address bar." Thanks go to fahque for this one.

One More Free Tool

PaperCut Print Logger provides real-time activity logs detailing all printer use, including time of print, user, number of pages, document names, job attributes such as paper size, color mode and more. Suggested by woolmittensarewarm, who first found it useful "... at a K-12 school district when teachers in computer labs would call asking which student just printed 50 full-color photos of Britney Spears. I don't manage printers or print servers in my current role, but I still use it when I'm about to decomm any server with a print queue. Let it run for a few weeks and then check to verify no users are still printing to that server."

P.S. Bonus Free Tools

Okatee is a Chrome extension that integrates directly with Gmail to remove or replace unwanted metadata from your documents. Appreciated by cMan_ as "a tool to prevent tracking (and remove identifiable metadata)... that scrubs sensitive attachment metadata (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .pdf, etc.)"

BloodHound is a web app that uses graph theory to reveal the hidden, often unintended relationships within an Active Directory environment. Can be used to easily identify highly complex attack paths and provide a deeper understanding of privilege relationships.

Have a fantastic week and as usual, let me know any comments.
