Hello IT Pro,

This week we're looking for IT-related tutorials to share with the community... the free how-tos that help you do your job better. Please leave a comment with your suggestions, and we'll be featuring them in the coming weeks.

As always, we’re updating the full list on our website here. Enjoy.

But on with this week's tools...! Here are the most-interesting items that have come across our desks, laptops and phones this week. As always, EveryCloud has no known affiliation with any of these unless we explicitly state otherwise.

A Website

IP Converter Tools offers a great collection of useful tools for dealing with networks. Includes tools to convert CIDR notations to IP ranges (and vice versa), sort IP addresses and convert IP addresses to decimal, hexadecimal and binary. Recommended by mythofechelon.

A Free Tool

Fing lets you see what's happening on any network. Can identify connected devices, troubleshoot network and device issues, detect network intruders and run Wi-Fi and internet speed tests anywhere. Appreciated by Fr31l0ck as "a network enumeration smartphone app similar to Nmap."

A Tip

A Linux shortcut offered by flunky_the_majestic:

"CTRL + R works at a Linux Bash shell to search your command history. It's fantastic to repeat a complicated command that you typed earlier in the day."

A Podcast

TubbTalk is a podcast intended to help IT Consultants, MSPs and IT business owners become better at their jobs. Features conversations with the IT industry's top thought leaders as well as all the latest insights, news and reviews on relevant technology. Kindly suggested by Corey Trach.

Another Tip

Keyboard shortcuts, courtesy of turmacar:
  • Win + Shift + arrow keys—moves a window between monitors (for shenanigans where a window is stuck on a broke/imaginary monitor)
  • Win + Ctrl + D—creates a new virtual desktop
  • Win + Ctrl + F4—closes the current virtual desktop (windows are preserved, moved to the new current desktop)
  • Win + Ctrl + arrow keys—moves between virtual desktops
  • Win + Tab—is an exploded view that lets you manage windows/virtual desktops
  • Win + Ctrl + Shift + B—reloads your graphics drivers

P.S. Bonus Free Tools

RDCMan is a more-flexible option for managing multiple remote desktop connections vs. the built-in MMC Remote Desktops snap-in. Features include virtual machine connect-to-console support, smart groups, support for credential encryption with certificates, Windows 8 remote action support and support for Windows 8, 8.1, Server 2012, Server 2012 R2.  Recommended by _bani_, and wookiestackhouse adds, "Allows for saving creds (tied to the local user profile, so moving the config files to a different machine invalidates the saved password), custom resolutions, auto-scaling, auto-resolution, support for TS gateway."

hrPing offers more features compared with the average Ping, including a graphical display of results, high resolution timers that are accurate to the usec, ability to ping with UDP packets or ICMP timestamp messages and have multiple pings "in-flight", times and handles ICMP error replies, no need to wait for a reply before sending the next ping, is both a Traceroute and a Pathping. Darkhigh recommends it for times when "...your on windows and tracking down intermittent network and or latency issues... Can set how often a new ping is sent as well as how long to wait before counting it as timed out."

Have a fantastic week and as usual, let me know any comments.
