IT Pro Tuesday #87

Port Scanner, Packet Tracing, PowerShell Blog & More…

Get this in your inbox each week.

Hello IT Pro,

Welcome to another edition of IT Pro Tuesday! This week we're looking for little-known tricks you’ve found for solving tech problems that we can share with the community. Please leave a comment with your suggestions, and we'll be featuring them in the coming weeks.

As always, we’re updating the full list on our website here. Enjoy!

But on with this week's tools... Here are the most-interesting items that have come across our desks, laptops and phones this week. As always, EveryCloud has no known affiliation with any of these unless we explicitly state otherwise.

A Free Tool

Open Port Scanner is a tool for discovering open TCP ports and displaying information about known services that may be running on the machine. Thanks go to Wrzos1 for the suggestion.

A Tip

Keyboard shortcut: SHIFT + RIGHT CLICK adds a couple options to the right click menu.

Sys_man likes it "when writing scripts and documentation... the one I use all the time is ‘copy as path’. It saves the path to the file in the clipboard.”

Another Free Tool

TRACERT (Trace Route) is a command-line utility for tracing the path of an IP packet. Suggested by a9JDvXLWHumjaC, who says, "as a dev, I love... native lowly tracert, run from the box experiencing the issue. Cuts to the chase 200x faster than the smartest dev...  When tech support calls me for one of my apps, that it has trouble connecting to a database, I have them run a quick tracert. It always solves the problem, misconfigured dns settings on the client."

A Blog

Mike F Robbins: Scripting | Automation | Efficiency is a fantastic technical blog on PowerShell. It is the work of Mike Robbins—author, Microsoft Cloud and Datacenter Management MVP for Windows PowerShell and co-founder of the Mississippi PowerShell User Group. Fresh content is added regularly.

One More Free Tool

PureText is a tiny tray utility for removing all text formatting from your clipboard. Just copy/cut, click on the PureText icon, and paste the format-free text to any application. You can also configure a hotkey to convert and paste the text for you. The_Cat_Detector_Van tells us, "I configure this one for Crtl + Shift + v and start with Windows, now it works with all applications."

P.S. Bonus Free Tools

FileSeek is an easy-to-use search tool with advanced functionality. Search through or within files in the folders you choose using simple queries or regular expressions. Use filters and sync your search settings between computers. mythofechelon recommends it  as "the best searching app that I've ever encountered."

PA Server Monitor - Remote Access Edition serves as a secure HTTPS tunnel, letting you Remote Desktop (or VNC) to computers at client sites. Does not require you to install an agent on each computer, open holes in the client firewall or expose RDP to the Internet. Provides Remote Access, uptime monitoring and notification when a satellite (one monitoring agent per site) doesn't connect from the client site, alerting you to possible client-side network problems. Offers unlimited ping monitoring to ping any device/computer, alert if down and see historical reports and charts. Could be considered to replace LogMeIn or TeamViewer.

Have a fantastic week and as usual, let me know any comments.
